Google Trends: Careers Vs. Jobs
Google Trends is a neat new tool from Google Labs which allows you to compare searches on Google and see "what the world is searching for". My immediate thought (I know this might not sound good) was to compare "careers, jobs". The results speak for themselves, overwhelmingly searches are for jobs not careers. I know this is not science but my own experience reflects this. Many people concentrate on looking for jobs instead of thinking about careers. Don't get me wrong, a job can make you happy, but if it doesn't then you need a new job. But if you can find a career that makes you happy you build yourself more control into the equation.
I can also tell you that when it comes to the great candidates I have met, almost all of them have a career focus, not a job focus. They are able to make decisions on whether a position is good for their entire career and not just if the job is good or not. That in itself is good reason to start moving your focus from "job" to "career".
