The Yamaguchi-gumi are Japan's largest organized crime group. They have approximately 39.000 members and grew by 3000 last year. Details surfaced a couple of weeks ago of a changing of leaders through retirement of the previous boss. And more announcements that the induction ceremony took place in an upscale neighborhood in Kobe City, home of the gang yesterday.
The previous leader lasted 16 years in the position. When you compare that with most CEO tenure recently, that is certainly a remarkable achievement, especially when you consider the nature of the business. It is of course not unusual for the CEO of a crime group to lose his job through extremely final means, and I am sure you know what I mean. It would seem that the organization is in an extremely stable position when you look at how smoothly this process took place.
UPDATE: If you are at all interested in learning more about the Yakuza the book to read is "Yakuza" by David E Kaplan and Alex Dubro.
